Hey pomai! There are definitely Asians in London but we're all from so many different Asian countries! And different races, and religions and each group hangs out in its own enclave so it can be difficult to seek out a particular type of food. No bento man here. :(

We can get some bento and musubi at most local mom and pop stores and the Japanese market on island but not the big variety you have from Bento Man. Pomai, consider yourself fortunate. I can only drool over your pictures ^_^!

Oh man, you make the mouth water looking at all that ono food. Mahalo for sharing the island taste. I will have to make a point of going to see the Bento Man. My sister's were raised in that region. When I do get home from Germany every three years we always run by Hawaii Kai and this next time I will be sure to stop in and check out the ono grinds. Next time will be in the summer of 2010 for myself and my wife. Can't get what you have there but my wife of German decent can whip up some great local dishes here in Germany too. Again, mahalo for the site and information. OK, let me clean off the saliva from the computer screen. \m/

Aloha Derrick,

What an honor to have the teacher of this endeavor leave a comment! (Everyone's comments are an honor, for sure).

Indeed, I would have preferred to have more lard on hand to render, but being a test-run, that 1 lb. of belly pork sufficed.

FYI, I did a follow-up comparison of cooking with lard vs. canola oil here:
http://tastyisland.wordpress.com/2008/06/30/lard-vs-canola-oil-sauteed-fish-challenge/

Still, I don't think that brought out the virtues of lard to its fullest glory. On my next "lardventure", I'd like to try deep-frying, either chicken and/or fish-n-chips!

Hey, your lard looks great. I definitely like to do large batches, if only so that I get a decent yield for the time it takes.
